The Art of Modern Fishing: Goodbye Live Fishing Baits, Hello Plastic Ones

If there is one outdoor activity every Australian man enjoys, then that must be fishing. From curious little boys learning how to fish with the help of their fathers, to close friends playfully comparing their fishing skills, to experienced fishers patiently waiting for the big fish to come, our beloved country’s shores and waters are full of fishing enthusiasts during the warm spring and summer months. Angling has become such a popular pastime not only because it’s a fun way of bonding with our fishing companions and catching our dinner, but also because it’s really easy.

Yes, our grandfathers had the amazing chance to start off their fishing experience with a spinning rod and a spinning reel (as modern spinning reels were invented and commercially introduced in 1948), but they had to go to the trouble of catching live baits because artificial lures were very hard to find. Up until the beginning of this century, most fishermen in Australia were forced to rely on foreign mail order catalogs to buy plastic fishing lures. Fortunately, things are much more different today. Our country’s market is full of reputable fishing tackle manufacturers and stores that offer their customers a wide choice of sophisticated and affordable artificial lures.

Soft Plastic Baits

So, what makes soft plastic baits such a great replacement for natural ones? Well, for starters, a soft plastic bait can come in many sizes, shapes, colors, and styles, meaning that these lures are suitable for fishing both small and large fish. Artificial lures land quietly, which makes them ideal for flats fishing, sight-casting, and surf fishing. Furthermore, plastic baits are extremely effective fishing baits, for they not only look like live ones, but they also move and smell like them. That’s right, many plastic fishing lures are scented in order to attract certain fish.

I believe that a soft plastic bait is the perfect option when you are trying to target big fish, because this is when natural baits can be eaten or partially chewed by smaller fish. This would never happen with plastic lures because they are made to endure any potential attack. Do you know what this means? It means that these products will save you both money and time.

Now, I know that some (fisher)men think that using plastic fishing baits instead of live ones is shameful and disrespectful to our ancestors, but I say that it’s only smart. Everything evolves, including the art of fishing. I’m sure your grandfather would understand.
