How We Constructed The Perfect Football Field In Our Backyard

How We Constructed The Perfect Football Field In Our Backyard

Being a parent isn’t just about hugs and kisses, in a sense it’s basically taking care of someone else’s needs. All of them. Take me and my hubby for example.

Over the past few years we’ve tried everything to turn our backyard into a playground. From inflatable pools and fountains, to wooden tree houses and DIY playground toys, you name it – we’ve had it. The problem is, as our children started getting older their wishes started getting bigger. So when we accepted the fact that they’re not 3 years old anymore, we had to adapt our backyard to their 10 year old needs. Since sports are a huge part of our family, we decided to make a backyard football field and let me tell you, we’re all super thrilled about it! The creating process of it turned out to be incredibly fun and easy, which means the whole family participated.

Since we wanted to make it as authentic as possible, spreading it all over the backyard, we decided to go for the addition of a quality synthetic turf along with drawing white lines (end lines, sidelines and goal lines) and installing goalposts. We went for a spring, natural looking synthetic turf with a soft touch, yet still hard wearing and that’s what saved us a ton of money and time, because the low maintenance of artificial grass is incomparable with the all-demanding maintenance natural grass requires.

Once we had installed the turf, we needed some help from the internet experts concerning the lines. Now, I’m gonna be honest with you. Even though I’ve always considered myself a sports fanatic, there were always some things I didn’t quite understand, such as the meaning of the white football field lines for example. But with the power of the internet one can become an expert at something, so I found this amazing guide for football dummies and I didn’t let it go until I felt absolutely sure I’ve mastered the whole thing.

When we finally understood the meaning and the purpose of the lines, we drew them on the field with a proper paint for synthetic turf and let it dry for the night. Now we only needed two goalposts and a name for our family “football team.” We opted for a cheaper version so my husband constructed the perfect goalposts out of PVC pipes and in just a few hours we were out playing ball with the kids.

As for the name, it was our children’s duty so they came up with a cute solution: “The F Team,” F standing for family. These days we’re training really hard to beat our neighbours’ team, because whoever wins has to make barbecue and muffins, so can you please root for us? (chuckles)
