Designing Your Teen’s Room: Why It Should Not Be a Nightmare

Teens are all about independence and staying as far away from their parents as possible. It’s that period when they only want to be with their friends, locked in their rooms listening to loud music or out experimenting and having fun. They always seem to look for their own personal space and no parent should try to take this desire and curiosity away from them. These are hard years for kids, so instead of making it even harder for them, the whole family should try to respect their emotional and physical changes, because what they’re going through is a real roller coaster of emotions and we all know that very well because we’ve already been through it.

If you have a teen at home and they’re sleeping in the same room with their sibling, I have to break it to you, but they really need to be separated ASAP. The “teen period” is also a reminder that it’s time to behave like an adult and they can’t really act adults if they are surrounded with all kinds of toys and the constant murmur of their little brother or sister. Plus this is the time when they will try to find the style that suits them the most and besides clothes, what’s a better way to express your personality? Interior design of course. It’s important to give them freedom in the decoration process because if you’re constantly telling them that the colors don’t match or the curtains are ugly, they will start feeling insecure and vulnerable. You should definitely help with ideas, but make sure they’re the ones in charge when it comes to designing their own room.

TEEN ROOM 2

Since teen by default means no longer a small child, you should get rid of the kid’s furniture and start looking for some new bedroom furniture sets that will reflect their vivid personality. The most safe choice would be bedroom furniture sets in one predominant colour so they can add as much details and decorations as possible because teens really like STUFF. Teens are torn between childhood and adulthood so they will definitely keep a few of their favorite toys because they’re still not ready to give them up even though they will like a more sophisticated room than their old childhood one. Regardless of the size, a teen’s room should be versatile and personal, almost like a mini self-contained apartment because they want to spend time with their friends there, study, read or watch TV.

TEEN ROOM 3

And forget about calm design and keeping everything in order because teens are the total opposite. They prefer vibrant, high energy rooms where they can express their personality, their dreams and their desires. Follow their needs and you’ll get a perfect multipurpose room and they are going to absolutely love it. Also, don’t forget to leave some space on the walls because a lot of teens want to wake up to their favorite musicians, actors, heroes or any kind of pop idols they have, so if they want to fill the blank space with posters, let them. It’s a totally normal phase and you should totally respect it.

All in all, designing a room for your teen is not as difficult as it might seem. If you know their hobbies and their necessities you will have a perfect result: their dream room. Don’t despair on the bedroom furniture sets because they will know what’s best for them, so let them choose their own furniture. The awesomeness of being a teen is that the world is their oyster, so don’t crush their dreams and expectations before they enter the real world. Be open minded and trustworthy with them and you’ll end up with a happy and loved teenager at home.
