Dining Chairs: How to Pull Off a Mix & Match Look

Today mix-and-match dining sets are so vogue. They give a very personal imprint to the space, making it look much more inviting and modern. Shaking up the traditional matching dining chairs is a great starting point for creating a more vibrant space that will scream uniqueness and emit the vibes you want it to. So ditch the matching set and bring together pieces that are of different style but somehow feel right when put together. Tough task, ha? No worries, stay with me to learn how to create unexpected combinations with a whole new flair – it all comes down to choosing chairs in tones and shades that look nice together. Let’s have some fun!

Same colour, different shapes

This combination sort of reminds of the trend in bridesmaids’ dresses – they can all have a different form as long as they are in the same colour. Similarly, provided that they’re in the same hue, mixing and matching dining chairs is quite easy. Just make sure they’re all in the same general style to make it look like they’re a set and to get a more polished look.

Same chairs, different colours

Another way to bring some colour and infuse your dining room with life is to take a simple set of wooden chairs and paint each chair in a different colour so that you put your own stamp. Here’s a tip – go with colours that have the same value, meaning, paint all of them in either pastels, midtone colours or make all of them bright.

Same upholstery, different shapes

For a more traditional-like look, combine a group of fine looking chairs all in different shapes and have them re-covered in the same fabric. This way you’ll create a traditional, yet a more playful set that will bring more dimension to your space.

Same chairs, different seat cushions (or upholstery)

This should be easy; get a simple set of wooden chairs (or use an old one) and just buy cushions in different colours and pattern designs. Make sure the colours go well together so that you do not create a colour mess that will be an eye sore.

Bench + chairs

If you have a small dining room space but want to accommodate as many people as possible, it would be a great idea to put a low bench on one side of the dining table to break up the dining chairs set. Plus, a bench will typically cost you less than buying individual chairs. Go with an upholstered one for added comfort.

Simple chairs + upholstered ones at the end

This mix almost always turns out great and is probably the most popular way to break up a set. Go with matching side chairs for the long sides and matching upholstered armchairs at the ends of the table. Bon appetit!
