The History of Garage Project Brewery

The brewery’s modest beginning started in 2011 when Pete and Ian Gillespie along with Jos Ruffel, decided to turn an old garage into a brewing space. The initial batches were small and experimental, but it didn’t take long for the team to develop a cult following.

The three friends had a shared passion for good beer, and they were quickly able to turn their hobby into a blooming business. Their enthusiasm and commitment to always produce high-quality brews no matter what the batch size is, have made them one of the most well-respected breweries not just in New Zealand, but internationally.

Jos’ infectious enthusiasm and bubbling energy helped push the idea into reality and together with his business acumen, they managed to create a brewery that has since been lauded as one of the most successful start-ups in New Zealand. Ian’s background in winemaking also proved to be an asset in brewing as he was able to bring a different perspective to the table.

Pete, on the other hand, was always the driving force behind the vision of the brewery. His unending passion for beer and willingness to take risks has led them to where they are today. From a tiny garage operation, they are now one of the most successful breweries with a production capacity of 10,000 Litres a week.

As for Ian, he’s a Jack-of-all-trades and is always game to try new things. He’s the one who manages to tie all the loose ends together and makes sure that everything is running smoothly. His years of experience in running a business and his ability to problem-solve on the fly have been one of the secrets to their success.

As such, all three play an integral role in the success of Garage Project Brewery, working together seamlessly to create some of the best beers in the world. And that’s not just us saying it – their award-winning brews have been raved about by some of the most reputable beer critics, leaving no doubt that these guys know what they’re doing.

What Makes Garage Project Unique?

As is the case with most brewing businesses out there, they all have their own unique selling points that make them stand out from the rest. For Garage Project, their three main strengths would be their quirky labels, brewing techniques, and customer satisfaction.

Quirky Labels

One look at their website and you’ll quickly see that they have one of the most interesting collections of beer labels in the industry. The psychedelic patterns and vibrant colours are a stark contrast to the usual muted and earthy tones that most breweries go for.

It’s this willingness to experiment and take risks with their designs that have helped them gain a loyal following among beer lovers who are always on the lookout for something new and exciting. Each label is designed by different artists, many of whom are friends of the team, which helps give each beer its own unique identity.

Among the classics, you’ll find the ‘Hazy Daze’, a New England-style IPA that’s perfect for summer days, with a realistic depiction of an eyeball plunged into a swirling pool of colourful liquids. Another would be the ‘Broke Deck’ WCIPA, which features sharks and other sea creatures battling terrestrial creatures in an all-mighty brawl. Quite an apt label for a beer that’s described as “a tropical fruit bomb of a beer”.

Brewing Techniques

While their labels might be what first catches your eye, it’s the brewing techniques that they use that really sink their hooks into you. They’ve always been willing to experiment with different styles and flavours, which has led to the creation of some truly unique brews.

For instance, their ‘DFA’ beer is brewed using a process called ‘dry-hopping’, which gives it a distinct fruity aroma that’s reminiscent of Moscato wines. Another would be the ‘Coconutty’ stout, which is made using a blend of roasted malts and coconut water to create a smooth and creamy finish.

Customer Satisfaction

Last but not least, Garage Project takes customer satisfaction very seriously. They are always looking for ways to improve the quality of their products and make sure that their customers are happy with what they’re getting.

By implementing quality control measures at every stage of the brewing process, they are able to ensure that each batch of beer is up to their high standards. They also go the extra mile by conducting customer surveys and focus groups to get feedback on what they can do better. This attention to detail has led to a loyal customer base that knows that they can always count on Garage Project to deliver quality brews.
